MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team opened the 2015 spring season with a 7-2 loss to visiting Alma College Sunday (Feb. 22) at the Marietta Tennis Center. The loss drops Marietta to 1-3 on the season, while Alma improves to 2-2 overall.
Alma took an early 2-1 lead after doubles.
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) outlasted Bryan Schutte and Trent Pontious at No. 1 posting an 8-6 victory. Alma picked up wins Nos. 2 and 3. Jared Guy and Luke Van Fleet downed
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Justin McGinnis (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) by the score of 8-0 at No. 2, while Chad Barnhart and Damien Arthur posted an 8-1 win at No. 3 against
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue/Bellevue) and
Jon Fitzwater (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun).
SchaefferSchaeffer accounted for Marietta's lone single win defeating Schutte at No. 1 by the score of 8-4. Pontious was an 8-0 winner over Sigman at No. 2 and Guy defeated McGinnis, 6-0 and 6-0, at No. 3.
Alma swept the bottom three singles. Van Fleet beat Adkinson at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-0. Noah Ackerman won at No. 5 against Leisue, 6-0 and 6-1. Phil Ryskamp took the No. 6 match against Fitzwater by the scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
