Box ScoreALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union defeated Marietta College 9-0 Wednesday (April 9) in Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis action. The Pioneers are 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 9-2 overall and 2-2 in the OAC.
The Purple Raiders opened strong sweeping the doubles matches. At No. 1, Rob DeMarco and Jeff Williams were 8-3 winners against
Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington). Ben Swope and Malcolm Leake downed
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) and
Justin McGinnis (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) at No. 2, 8-1, while Josh Duerr and Chase Krummel posted an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Brandon Adkinson and
Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg).
Schaeffer gave Leake all he could handle at No. 1 singles. Leake escaped with the victory, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) and 10-8. At No. 2 singles, DeMarco blanked Daub in the first set 6-0 and then won the match with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5) second set.
Mount Union posted straight-set victories in the bottom four singles. Swope defeated Grant at No. 3, 6-3 and 6-0. Williams was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 4 over Sigman. Patrick Yackmack beat McGinnis, 6-0 and 6-1, at No. 5, while Dominic Marino downed
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) by the same score at No. 6.
Marietta is back in action on Saturday (April 12) with a pair of matches at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in mason, Ohio. The Pioneers play Heidelberg University at 2:00 p.m. and Baldwin Wallace University at 5:00 p.m.
