Women's Rowing finishes second at Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Championship

LEWISBERRY, Pa. – The Marietta College women's rowing team placed second in the overall point standings at the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Championships Saturday (April 26) afternoon. The Pioneers finished with 37 points, one point behind league champion Washington College.

"We need to continue to learn how to race at the next level to be successful at the Dad Vail Regatta and have a chance to finish our season in Indianapolis," head coach Brad Hemmerly said. "While we did make improvements over the last few weeks, this group still has a good amount of untapped potential."

The overall point standings are comprised of the varsity 8+ and second varsity 8+ races. Washington College won the varsity 8+ race with the Pioneers finishing second. The school swapped positions in the second varsity 8+ race with Marietta winning and Washington College finishing second.

Marietta's varsity 8+ shell easily won its morning heat. The Pioneers crossed the line in 7:25.80, well ahead of Franklin & Marshall (7:41.50), North Park (8:10.10) and Richard Stockton (9:23.80).

The Pioneers varsity 8+ lineup included coxswain Hannah Platt (Potomac, Md./Walt Whitman), Isabella Hildebrandt (Lakewood/Rocky River) in the stroke seat, Ricci Davis (Marietta/Marietta), Katie Williams (Mars, Pa./Mars), Eileen Walsh (Cherry Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace), April Pendergrass (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), Anja Curwen (Carlisle Pa./St. Bouaventure), Katie Transue (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) and Erika Gill (Copley/Copley) in the bow.

Washington College won the battle in the Grand Final posting a time of 7:11.70. Marietta was second with a time of 7:21.20, followed by Franklin & Marshall (7:43.28), Mary Washington (7:58.07), Bryn Mawr (8:03.81) and North Park (8:41.84).

It was no contest for the Pioneers' second varsity 8+ crew. Rowing for the first time on the day in the Grand Final, Marietta finished nearly 25 seconds ahead of the field for the win. The Pioneers posted a time of 7:52.40. Washington College was second in 8:16.98, with Franklin & Marshall (8:50.49) and Mary Washington (9:05.51) well behind.

Marietta sat coxswain Sydney Maltese (Canton/Central Catholic), stroke Shelbi Westfield (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic), Katherine Tedesco (Upper Arlington/Upper Arlington), Alycia Kime (Sicklerville, N.J./Winslow Township), Stephanie Meinert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area), Marissa Jeswald (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Park School of Buffalo), Payton Wright (Coshocton/River View), Rachael Schleich (Grandview Heights/Grandview Heights) and Annie Jennings (Columbus/Upper Arlington) in the bow for the second varsity 8+ race.

"We have two weeks to prepare for the Dad Vail Regatta, which is a huge deal for the program," Hemmerly said. "This group continues to be undeterred in their pursuit of speed."
