MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's tennis team defeated Waynesburg University by the score of 8-1 Saturday (March 22) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-5 overall, while the Yellow Jackets falls to 1-3 on the season.
Sophomore
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) and junior
Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York) accounted for three of the Pioneers' team points. The pair posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Isaiah Cochran and Timothy Harris.
Schaeffer was also victorious at No. 1 singles beating Cochran, 6-4 and 6-3, while Grant took the No. 3 singles point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Philip Littlejohn.
Waynesburg claimed its only point of the match at No. 2 doubles. Littlejohn and Colin Phillips downed
Justin McGinnis (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca), 8-2. Marietta's Brandon Adkinson and
Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) beat James Manges and Mitchell Ross, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles.
Daub beat Harris in straight sets at No. 2 singles, 6-2 and 6-3. Sigman and McGinnis won at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Sigman was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Phillips and McGinnis beat Ross, 6-2 and 6-4.
Sophomore
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) completed the singles sweep for Marietta when he blanked Manges, 6-0 and 6-0.
