HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Bridgewater College swept a pair of matches from the Marietta College men's and women's tennis teams Monday (March 10) morning. The Eagles downed the Pioneer men 9-0 and posted an 8-1 win against the women.
The Marietta men fall to 1-2 on the season, while the women drop to 0-7 overall.
In the women's match, Marietta's lone point came at No. 3 doubles where
Kelsey Jeffrey (The Plains/Athens) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington) posted an 8-2 win over Whitney Cash and Jamee Hardison. Bridgewater's Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins downed
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) and Beth Maloney at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Jessie Mitchell and Maria O'Bryan posted an 8-3 win over Marietta's
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Mollee Brown (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) at No. 2 doubles.
The Eagles swept all six singles matches. In the top spot, Gordon beat Maloney, 6-0 and 6-1. Hawkins won at No. 2 over Gisser by the score of 6-0, 6-1. Becker fell at No. 3 to O'Bryan, 6-1 and 6-0.
Mitchell, Cash and Leanne Smithers took Nos. 4-6 singles, respectively. Mitchell defeated Brown, 6-2, 6-0. Cash downed
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville), 7-6 (7-4) and 6-4, while Smithers was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt).
On the men's side, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Mike Cable and Christian Lynn downed
Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) at No. 1 by the score of 8-4.
Joey Casavecchia (Chardon/Chardon) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) lost an 8-2 decision at No. 2 to Brandon Larsen and Thomas Rishcoff. At No. 3, Sam Churchill and Kyle Hartfield were 8-1 winners over Brandon Adkinson and
Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg).
Larsen defeated Schaeffer, 6-1 and 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Hartfield took the No. 2 matchup against Daub, 6-1 and 6-4, while Rishcoff was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Sigman at No. 3.
Churchill beat Casavecchia at No. 4 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Cable and Drew Hubble took Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Cable defeated
Justin McGinnis (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area), 6-0 and 6-2, while Hubble posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg).
The women are back in action on Wednesday (March 12) at 8:00 a.m. against Wittenberg University. The Pioneer men play Defiance College on Tuesday (March 11) at 12:00 p.m.
