WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University team defeated Marietta College by the score of 5-0 Wednesday (May 1) afternoon in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament. The Pioneers finish their season with a 2-14 overall record.
Otterbein (17-4 overall) swept the three doubles matches and then notched wins at Nos. 1 and 5 singles to advance into the OAC semifinals.
The Cardinals' Emma Krummel and Sammi Kruger downed
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington), 8-2, at No. 1 doubles. Adrien Leatherwood and Megan Locke took the No. 2 match by the same score over Kelsey Jeffrey and
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville).
Mollee Brown (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) and
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) were shutout, 8-0, by Emily Harper and Alana Chelpowitz at No. 3.
Leading 3-0 after doubles, the Cardinals grabbed a quick point at No. 1 singles when Julie Stroyne blanked Gisser, 6-0 and 6-0. Otterbein secured the win with Leatherwood's 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 against Seals.
Otterbein was leading in the four unfinished singles matches. Kruger and Cheplowitz both won the first set of their matches and were leading in the second set when the match was stopped. Kruger was leading Turner at No. 2, 6-0 and 5-0. Cheplowitz held a 6-0, 2-0 lead at No. 3 over Jeffrey.
At No. 4, Krummel was leading Bush 5-2 in the first set, while Rebecca Freitag had just won the first set, 6-2, at No. 6 against Brown when the match was stopped.
The Pioneers return all but one of their players next season. The lone senior on the team is
Sarah Snow (Twentynine Palms, Calif./29 Palms).
