MEDINA, Ohio – The John Carroll University women's tennis team defeated Marietta College Saturday (April 20) afternoon by the score of 9-0. The Pioneers fall to 2-11 overall and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll improves to 5-9 on the season and 3-4 in league play.
The Blue Streaks swept the doubles play for an early 3-0 lead. Catherine Engel and Kyle Cousineau downed
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington), 8-0, at No. 1, while Tracy Gibson and Anna Stein posted an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Kelsey Jeffrey and
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville).
The best match of the day came at No. 3 doubles. Marietta's
Mollee Brown (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) and
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision to Corinne Hendrock and Katelyn Hill.
John Carroll posted straight-set wins in all six singles matches. Engel beat Gisser in the top spot, 6-0 and 6-1. Stein and Gibson took the Nos. 2 and 3 matches by the same 6-0, 6-0 score. Stein defeated Turner at No. 2, while Gibson was victorious against Jeffrey at No. 3.
Cousineau was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 4 over Bush. Hannah Baumwell took the No. 5 match from Seals, 6-2 and 6-2. Emily Gorndt completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 against Brown.
