Men's Tennis records second shutout of Bethany this season

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's tennis team swept the season series with Bethany College (W.Va.) Monday (April 1) posting a 9-0 shutout for the second time in eight days. The Pioneers improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Bison fall to 3-5 overall.

Marietta's freshman tandem of Ashton Whiteleather (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) quickly dispatched Dustin Maiolo and James Peterson at No. 1 doubles by the score of 8-0. Whiteleather downed Peterson 6-0 and 6-2 at No. 1 singles as well.

At No. 2 doubles, Andy Knauff (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) and Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) posted an 8-2 win over Kyle Booker and Jared Roque. Taimur Ahmed (Islamabad, Pakistan/Froebels International) and Ryan Gontero (Kent/Kent Roosevelt) teamed up for the first time this season to win the final doubles match, 8-6, against Dakota Maravelis and Dylan Schooley.

Schaeffer and Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) posted straight-set wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. Schaeffer downed Maravelis 6-0 and 6-0, while Daub was a 6-2 and 6-1 winner against Maiolo.

Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York) made quick work of Roque at No. 4 singles, 6-0 and 6-0. Sigman recorded the win at No. 5 over Booker, 6-1, 6-3.

Abdul Sheikh (Columbus/Saint Johnsbury Acad.) completed the sweep with a three-set thriller at No. 6 singles. Sheikh took the first set against Schooley 6-3, but dropped the second 2-6. With the overall match decided, the pair played a pro-set to determine the match. Sheikh prevailed 10-8 to secure the win.
