Men's Tennis finishes southern swing with 2-2 record

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Marietta College men's tennis team split its final two matches in Hilton Head. The Pioneers lost to St. Mary's College (Md.) 7-2 on Thursday (March 14) and defeated Defiance College 8-1 on Friday (March 15).

Marietta wraps up its southern trip with a 2-2 overall record.

Ashton Whiteleather (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York) picked up wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles against St. Mary's. Whiteleather defeated Wyatt Paulishak 6-0 and 6-2, while Grant posted an 8-3 pro-set win over Robert Bishop.

The Pioneers took two of three doubles against Defiance for an early 2-1 lead. Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) and Whiteleather defeated Ryan Nelson and Cord Speelman 9-8 (4) at No. 1, while Andy Knauff (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) and Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) downed Michael Vanderkolk and Justin Walker at No. 3, 9-8 (13).

Marietta swept the singles matches. Whiteleather beat Mike Ross at No. 1, 6-0 and 6-3. Schaeffer defeated Nelson in three sets at No. 2, 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Daub posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Speelman.

Knauff, Grant and Taimur Ahmed (Islamabad, Pakistan/Froebels International) each posted straight-set wins at Nos. 4-6 singles, respectively. Knauff was a 6-0 and 6-2 winner over Bills, while Grant downed Walker, 6-4 and 7-5. Ahmed finished singles sweep with a 6-0 , 6-1 victory over Vanderkolk.
