Box Score 2 PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – On its last full day at the Snowbird Baseball Classic Marietta College split a pair of games Friday (March 15) afternoon. The No. 2 ranked Pioneers lost to Webster University (Mo.) 3-2 in 10 innings before defeating Wheaton College (Ill.) by the score of 10-5.
The Etta Express is 7-2 overall and will finish the Florida portion of its schedule with an 11:00 a.m. game against No. 3 ranked Wheaton College (Mass.) on Saturday (March 16).
Marietta freshman
Jason Byers (East Granby, Conn./East Granby) had his second quality start of the season pitching 7.0 strong innings. Byers allowed two runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out one.
However, just like his first start that saw Marietta lose to Montclair State 2-0, Byers received no run support. When Byers left the game in the eighth inning, the Pioneers trailed 2-0.
Marietta scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to force the extra frame. Sophomore
Mitch Geers (West Chester/Lakota East) received a two-out walk and then advanced to third on a double by senior
Alex Toth (Painesville/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin).
Webster went to the bullpen and replaced starting pitcher Steven Dooley with Jason Gray. Senior
Bryan Gregorich (Chardon/Chardon) hit one back to the mound and Gray's throw sailed over the first baseman's head allowing both runners to score and tie the game, 2-2.
Webster center fielder Cody Stephenson led off the tenth with a walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by Corey Lasky. Ryan Hall followed with a single to center scoring Stevenson with the go ahead run.
Gray (2-0) allowed a couple of base runners in the bottom of the inning but secured the win with a ground out. Gray pitched 1.1 innings of relief and allowed one hit and struck out two.
Dooley went 8.2 innings and gave up two unearned runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out five.
Sophomore
Mike Fulton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) (1-1) took the loss for Marietta. Fulton tossed 3.0 innings and allowed one run on one hit. He walked two and struck out three.
Designated hitter
Josh Ungerbuehler (Cincinnati/Roger Bacon) went 2-for-5, while Toth had a double for Marietta.
Hall finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in for Webster. Jared Turner and Kevin Kojs each had two hits in the game.
Against Wheaton, the Pioneers scored four unearned run in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed. Marietta added six runs in the middle three innings for a 10-2 lead.
Senior
Mike Mulvey (Glenshaw, Pa./North Catholic) (2-0) picked up the win pitching 7.0 innings. Mulvey allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Wheaton scored two runs in the eighth inning off of sophomore
Anthony Knittel (Stout/Portsmouth West) and added one in the ninth.
Knittel threw one inning giving up the two runs on a pair of hits. He walked three and had two strikeouts. Freshman
Jordan Carithers (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge) walked on and struck out two in the ninth. He allowed an unearned run.
Senior
Aaron Hopper (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) went 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles. Hopper has 49 career doubles and moved into fifth place on Marietta's all-time list.
Senior
Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont) and freshman
Tyler Packanik (Plant City, Fla./Newsome) each collected two hits, while Toth drove in four runs.
