MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's and women's tennis team dropped Ohio Athletic Conference matches to Capital University Friday (April 6) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center. The Crusader men downed the Pioneers 6-3, while the women posted a 5-4 win over Marietta. [

Marietta's men fall to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. The Pioneer women are 0-6 on the season and 0-2 in league play. Capital's men improve to 4-13, 1-2 OAC. The Crusader women are now 2-10 overall, 1-2 in the OAC.
In the men's match, Capital took two of the three doubles matches for the early lead. John Murray and Kenny Duncan defeated
Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Dave Koscielny (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian) at No. 1 by the score of 8-2. The Pioneers'
Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Andy Knauff (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) were 8-4 winners at No. 2 against Josh Dotson and Doug Gugel-Bryant. Capital's Tommy Stein and Adrian Tolentino downed
Taimur Ahmed (Islamabad, Pakistan/Froebels International) and
Tyler Pullekines (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) at No. 3, 8-5.
Daub and Grant posted singles victories for Marietta. Daub defeated Murray at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 3-6 and 7-5. Grant was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4 over Gugel-Bryant.
Capital took the other four singles matches. Duncan posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 against Koscielny. Stein won at No. 3 by the scores of 7-6 (7-5), 0-6 and 6-0 against Knauff. Dotson and Tolentino won at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Dotson beat Ahmed, 7-5 and 7-6 (7-3). Tolentino took down Pullekines, 6-1 and 6-2.
In the women's match, the Crusaders swept the doubles play to take a 3-0 lead. Elisabeth McLaughlin and Alyssa Trier defeated
Caitlin Cornell (South Park, Pa./South Park) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) at No. 1 by the score of 8-2. Michelle Guy and Collyn Weaver were 9-7 winners at No. 2 against
Kelsey Jeffrey (The Plains/Athens) and
Sarah Snow (Twentynine Palms, Calif./29 Palms). Colleen Hooks and Kathryn MacFarland completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) and
Jamie Taylor (Allen, Md./Parkside) at No. 3.
The Pioneers won four of the six singles matches, including the top three. Cornell posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over McLaughlin at No. 1. Gisser downed Trier at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-4. At No. 3, Jeffrey beat Rebecca Hunt, 6-1 and 6-1. Snow gave the Marietta its final point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 against Hooks.
The Crusaders clinched the match with wins at Nos. 4 and 6. Guy posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Bush at No. 4, while Corinne Hohenstein downed
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) at No. 6, 6-1 and 6-2.
The Pioneer women are back in action on Wednesday (April 11) when they host Muskingum at 3 p.m. The men travel to Muskingum on Tuesday (April 10) for a 3 p.m. match.
