Pioneers fall at Otterbein in Men's Tennis

MARIETTA, Ohio – Junior Taimur Ahmed (Islamabad, Pakistan/Froebels International) claimed Marietta College's lone point in an 8-1 men's tennis loss at Otterbein University Wednesday (April 18) afternoon. The loss drops Marietta to 7-5 overall and 2-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Otterbein improves to 6-10 on the season and 4-2 in league play. [Box Score]

Playing No. 6 singles, Ahmed and Jacob DeVore split the first two sets. Ahmed took the first set 7-6 (6-4) and DeVore won the second 7-5. The pair played a pro-set to decide the match and Ahmed came away with the 8-6 victory.

The Cardinals opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. Ryan Roberts and DeVore posted an 8-3 win over Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Dave Koscielny (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian) at No. 1. Andy Knauff (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) and Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York) lost to Ryan Shutt and Sam Lawlees at No. 2 by the score of 8-3. Kendall Coffman and Tyler Gibbons completed the sweep at No. 3 with an 8-1 victory over Ahmed and Tyler Pullekines (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin).

Otterbein posted straight-set wins in the top four singles matches. Roberts downed Daub at No. 1, 7-5 and 6-3. Shutt was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Koscielny at No. 2. Coffman defeated Knauff at No. 3, 6-4 and 6-3, while Lawless beat Grant 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.

At No. 5 singles, Sutter edged Marietta's Pullekines in three sets. Pullekines won the first set 7-5 before Sutter bounced back to take the second set 6-3. In the third, Sutter won 8-5 in a pro-set to secure the win.

Marietta hosts John Carroll University Saturday (April 21) afternoon at 1 p.m.
