Heidelberg defeats Men's and Women's Tennis

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's and women's tennis teams both lost 8-1 decisions to Heidelberg University Saturday (April 14). The Pioneer men fall to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The women drop to 0-8 and 0-4 in the OAC. [Men's Box Score] [Women's Box Score]

Heidelberg's men took the early lead by winning all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Cliff Goetz and Bobby Lochotzki defeated Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Dave Koscielny (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian) by the score of 8-3. Patrick Ryan Earl and Zach Schwenning posted an identical 8-3 win at No. 2 against Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and Andy Knauff (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area). Dorion Kempf and Matthew McDivitt won at No. 3 over Taimur Ahmed (Islamabad, Pakistan/Froebels International) and Tyler Pullekines (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), 8-4.

Knauff picked up Marietta's lone point defeating Earl at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (8-6) and 6-3.

Heidelberg's Lochotzki and Goetz won in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Lochotzki posted a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Daub, while Goez downed Koscielny by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

Schwenning was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 4 against Grant. Kempf beat Pullekins at No. 5, 6-2 and 6-3, while McDivitt defeated Ahmed at No. 6, 6-1 and 7-5.

The Heidelberg women also swept doubles. Deidre Potter and Kayla Gerber posted an 8-3 win over Caitlin Cornell (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) at No. 1. Katie Strahan and Jackie Earl downed Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) and Jamie Taylor (Allen, Md./Parkside) at No. 2 by the same score. Sara Potts and Melissa Herrera Ortiz edged Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) and Kelsey Jeffrey (The Plains/Athens) 9-8 (7-3) at No. 3.

Gisser defeated Gerber, 6-0 and 6-2, at No. 2 singles for Marietta's only point of the match.

Potter beat Cornell at No. 1 and Strahan downed Jeffrey at No. 3. Potter won the scores of 6-2, 6-1. Strahan posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Jeffrey.

Earl, Potts and Herrera Ortiz took the Nos. 4-6 matches, respectively. Earl was a 6-0, 6-0 winner versus Bush. Potts downed Turner 6-1 and 6-1, while Herrera Ortiz notched a 6-0, 3-0 decision as Taylor retired.

Both the men and women are home on Tuesday (April 17). The women host Otterbein University at 3 p.m., while the men host Ohio Northern at 4 p.m.
