Women's tennis rallies past Muskingum 5-4

NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Marietta College women's tennis rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat host Muskingum University Sunday (May 1) evening and lock up the sixth seed in the 2011 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. [Box Score]

The Pioneers (6-9, 3-5 OAC), playing with our their top player #Kristina Reed (Grove City/Grove City)#, found themselves in a hole early as the Fighting Muskies (4-9, 1-8 OAC) collected all three doubles points, including a 9-8 (10-8) victory in the second slot.

Muskingum earned its fourth point with a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles. With its OAC Tournament lives potentially on the line, Marietta began a furious rally and captured the final five singles points to pull off the comeback.

#Elizabeth Malony# secured her first singles win of the season by taking the second singles point 6-4, 6-2.

#MacKenzie Boyles (Fairmont, W.Va./East)# improved to 5-9 on the year with a 7-5, 6-4 win at third singles.

#Sarah Campbell (Arnold, Md./Annapolis Senior)# won 6-3, 6-1 at fourth singles to push her individual record to 4-6.

#Sarah Snow (Twentynine Palms, Calif./29 Palms)# overcame a first-set loss to win 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) at fifth singles.

#Christina Tirpak (Galena/Olentangy)# tied for the team lead in individual wins with eight after posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory at sixth singles.

Marietta, who achieved its preseason goal of returning to the OAC Tournament and improving its seed, will be the sixth-seed and travel to third-seeded John Carroll University for an OAC Quarterfinal match at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 4). The Pioneers and Blue Streaks (8-10, 6-2 OAC) did not meet in the regular season as their match was rained out Sunday and not made up because the result would not affect the OAC Tournament seeds.
