Bault and Wallace finish runner-up at Liberty Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Marietta College junior heptathlete Ashley Bault (Atwater/Waterloo) and 3,000m steeple chase runner Terrance Wallace (Westerville/Westerville Central) broke away from the rest of the track and field team and posted runner-up finishes at the Liberty University Invitational Saturday (April 2). Bault, who earned All-America honors in both the pentathlon and long jump during the indoor season, set a school record and surpassed the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark of 4,100 points in her first ever heptathlon. Bault, who finished with 4,302 points, joined senior teammate and javelin thrower Nikki Stone (Madison/Madison) as the first two Pioneers to qualify for the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championship, which will take place May 26-28 at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Bault began her heptathlon Friday by taking eighth place among the 15 competitors in the 100m hurdles after crossing the line in a personal record 16.71 seconds. She then cleared a school record 1.63m (5-04.25) to place runner-up in the high jump. Bault followed with an eighth place finish in the shot put by posting a top mark of 8.78m (28-09.75) before closing out day one with a personal record 26.93 second performance to take 11th in the 200m dash. She then began day two with a second place finish in the long jump by leaping 5.11m (16-09.25). Bault added a third place finish in the javelin throw with a personal record mark of 31.12m (102-01) and capped her weekend with a fourth place finish in the 800m run, crossing the line in an outdoor personal best 2:33.83.

Wallace, meanwhile, battled 12 competitors as well as Saturday wind gusts up to 45 MPH to take runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase. The school record holder in the event crossed the line in 9:56.0.
