Pioneer Track & Field kicks off Winter Weekend with Alumni Open

MARIETTA, Ohio — Members of the Marietta College track and field team posted four individual victories to highlight the squad's performance at the Marietta Alumni Open, which kicked off the institution's annual Winter Weekend festivties Friday (Feb. 4) evening. [Results]

West Virginia Wesleyan University swept the event when its men totaled 140 points and its women had 165.60 points. The Pioneer men collected 112.33 points to place runner-up among the 12 schools competing. Marietta's women finished third with 86.50 points in their 13-school competition.

The featured event of Friday's meet was the men's 400m Dash. Prior to the race it was named in honor of Tom Moss '87, a member of the 28th Marietta Athletics Hall of Fame class. Moss, a four-time national qualifying and eight-time All-Conference sprinter, earned All-America honors after taking fifth in the 400m Dash at the 1987 NCAA Outdoor Championship and still holds the school record in both the indoor and outdoor 400m Dash. He will be formally inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday (Feb. 5) evening inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.

In a fitting tribute to Moss, junior Ryan Householder (Frazeysburg/Tri-Valley) and senior Anthony Williams (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) provided a head-to-head battle over the two-lap race to place first and second, respectively. Both finished in 52.19 seconds.

In other action, freshman Tyler Cordell (Caldwell/Caldwell ) and sophomore Lydia Tillmaand (Xenia/Xenia) helped Marietta sweep the 800m Runs as Cordell won the men's race with a time of 2:03.41 and Tillmaand won the women's race with a time of 2:32.94. The Pioneers' fourth individual champion was freshman Jason Hoskins (Westerville/Olentangy Orange), who took first in the men's High Jump after clearing 1.90m (6-02.75).

Eight other Marietta student-athletes and a relay captured second place Friday; junior Lauren Asbury (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va./Greenbrier East) 55m Dash (7.48); freshman #Sally Hauser 500m Run (1:28.02); senior Stephanie Williams (Vincent/Warren Local) 1,000m Run (3:27.56); senior Stephanie Hammond (Toledo/Central Catholic) Weight Throw (13.46m/44-02.00); senior Dele Adedapo (Gahanna/Bexley) 55m Dash (6.62); sophomore Caleb Ellis (St. Albans, W.Va./St. Albans) Mile Run (4:30.21); freshman Ryan Lopez-Jordan (Beachwood/St. Peter Chanel) 55m Hurdles (8.22); freshman Jon Monnig (Ironton/Ironton) Pole Vault (4.27m/14-00.00); Bibb, junior Chase Oberfield (Heath/Heath), freshman Brandon Harrison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and Cordell 4x400m Relay (3:34.67).

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday (Feb. 12) afternoon when they compete at the NCAA Division III All-Ohio Indoor Championship, hosted by Otterbein College. Action begins at 12 p.m.
