Mike Carpenter (Parkersburg, W.Va., Parkersburg) won at fourth singles to seal a 5-4 Marietta College men's tennis victory over visiting Waynesburg University Thursday (April 8) afternoon inside the Marietta Tennis Center. The win improved the Pioneers' record to 3-1 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 3-3. [

Marietta took the early lead by earned points at both first and third doubles. Sophomore
Josh Patterson (Jefferson, Jefferson) and junior
Andrew Bolton (Timonium, Md., Calvert Hall) teamed together to win 8-6 at first singles, while freshman
Taimur Ahmed (Islamabad, Pakistan, Froebels International) and junior
Chad Gardner (Cambridge, Cambridge) fought back from a 7-4 deficit to win third singles 9-7.
The Yellow Jackets then won three of the first five points in singles play to tie the match at 4-4. Ahmed won his fifth singles match 6-4, 7-5 and freshman
Abdul Sheikh (Columbus, Saint Johnsbury Acad.) won his sixth singles match 6-1, 6-1. Carpenter then secured the win with a 6-1, 7-5 at fourth singles.
Marietta is back in action Saturday (April 8) when the Pioneers visit Ohio Northern University for an Ohio Athletic Conference match at 1 p.m.
