Women's Tennis tops Muskingum 7-2

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team came one step closer to locking up a berth in the upcoming Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament with a 7-2 victory over visiting Muskingum University Tuesday (April 20) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center. [Box Score]

The victory improved the Pioneers' record to 2-7 overall and 2-5 in league play. They now hold a two-game lead and the tie breaker over both the Muskies (2-10, 0-6 OAC) and Capital University (1-6, 0-6 OAC). The two schools currently trail Marietta in the standings but have three matches to play, including one against each other. The top eight schools qualify for the OAC Tournament.

Marietta captured the momentum by earning all three points in doubles action. Senior #Lauren McKiernan (Parkersburg, W. Va./South)# and sophomore #Mackenzie Boyles# battled to an 8-6 win at first doubles. Sophomore #Caitlin Cornell (South Park, Pa./South Park)# and junior #Kristina Reed (Grove City/Grove City)# cruised to an 8-1 win at second doubles. Junior #Corin Bonnett (Bay Village/Bay)# and freshman #Sarah Snow (Twentynine Palms, Calif./29 Palms)# completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory at third doubles.

Reed and Snow clinched the win for the Pioneers with 6-0, 6-0 wins at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Boyles also notched a 6-0, 6-1 win at fifth singles and Cornell capped Marietta's points with a 6-2, 7-5 win at third singles.

Marietta takes a break from OAC play Thursday (April 22) when it plays host to Shawnee State University at 2 p.m. The Bears defeated the Pioneers 8-1 in a match earlier this seaosn on April 9.
