#10 Marietta defeats Pitt-Greensburg 10-9

MARIETTA, Ohio — The #10 Marietta College baseball team defeated visiting University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (Pa.) 10-9 Wednesday (March 24) evening at Don Schaly Stadium. The Etta Express improved its record to 11-3, while the Bobcats fell to 3-5. [Box Score]

Marietta sophomore shortstop Tim Saunders (Alliance, Alliance) extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 2-for-5 and two runs scored performance, while junior center fielder John Snyder (Altoona, Pa., Altoona), the reigning OAC Hitter of the Week, and sophomore second baseman Kirby Becker (South Euclid, St. Ignatius) both matched Saunders with two hits apiece in the victory.

Matt Gouveia went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Steven Anderson was 3-for-5 in the loss.

Pitt-Greensburg out hit the Pioneers 14-10 but they could not overcome six errors. Marietta committed one error in the victory, its ninth in the last 10 games.

Marietta scored four runs (three earned) on five hits in the second, while Pitt-Greensburg got on the board with two unearned runs in the third. The Bobcats then hit a trio of home runs to grab a 6-4 advantage in the fourth.

The Etta Express, keyed by a two-run home run by senior designated hitter Chris Beatty (Seven Fields, Pa., Hampton), reclaimed the lead, 7-6, in the fifth. The home run was Beatty's fifth of the spring and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Pitt-Greensburg tied the game with a run in the sixth. Marietta answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-7 advantage. The Bobcats scored a pair in the eighth to pull within a run, 10-9, but would not come any closer.

Freshman Evan Brockmeier (Marietta, Marietta) got the start and was tagged for five runs (three earned) on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. Brockmeier walked two and struck out one. Freshman Luke Langdon (Troy, Troy) worked the next 1 1/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits while walking a pair. Sophomore Brian Gasser (New Philadelphia, Indian Valley) pitched the sixth and seventh, allowing one run on two hits. Gasser, who earned the victory to improve to 4-0, walked one and struck out another. Sophomore Logan Lewis (Nashport, Tri Valley) gave up two runs on three hits in the eighth, before sophomore Kyle Lindquist (Columbus, Worthington Kilbourne) pitched around a two-out triple to close the door on the victory and earn his first save of the season.

Paul Altmyer threw the first five innings for the Bobcats. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and struck out two. Brian Colish (0-2), who took the loss, then gave up three unearned runs on two hits in his one inning of work. Zach Mikolics pitched the final two frames without giving up a run.

The Etta Express returns to action Thursday (March 25) afternoon when it visits #3 College of Wooster.
