#13 Pioneers rout Spartans 24-4 to finish weekend 3-1

Marietta finishes with a season-high 20 hits

MARIETTA, Ohio — Head Coach Brian Brewer's #13 Marietta College baseball team improved to 10-3 on the season with a 24-4 victory over visiting University of Dubuque (Iowa) Sunday (March 21) afternoon. [Box Score]

The victory wrapped up a busy weekend at Don Schaly Stadium, which saw the Etta Express defeat the Spartans, who dropped to 5-6, on both Friday and Sunday as well as split a doubleheader with #19 Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday.

All nine starters and five substitutes joined the Pioneers' season-high 20-hit parade in Sunday's victory, which was their eighth win in the last nine games. The Spartans finished with eight hits and committed four errors in the loss.

Marietta freshman third baseman Bryan Gregorich (Chardon, Chardon) came off the bench to finish 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore shortstop Tim Saunders (Alliance, Alliance), Saturday's game two hero, went 2-for-3 and slugged his third home run of the season while scoring three runs on the day. Junior center fielder John Snyder (Altoona, Pa., Altoona), junior left fielder Britt Meador (Columbus, Worthington Kilbourne) and freshman middle infielder Evan Brockmeier (Marietta, Marietta) all went 2-for-4. Meador, who had a double and a triple, collected five RBI, while Snyder produced two RBI.

Todd Whited led Dubuque's offense with two hits, including a double, while Jesse Lawler drove in a pair with a double.

Marietta led 1-0 after the first inning. The Spartans took a 3-1 advantage with a pair of runs in the second and another in the third. The Pioneers reclaimed the lead for good with a five-run third to make it 6-3. They increased their lead to 10-3 in the fourth and 11-3 in the fifth. Marietta then scored four runs in the seventh before exploding for nine runs in the eighth. Dubuque added a run in its half of the eighth but Marietta rolled to the 24-4 win.

Marietta freshman Michael Radvansky (Toronto, Toronto) made his first collegiate start and scattered three runs on five hits and walked one in three innings. Freshman Luke Langdon (Troy, Troy) worked the next three innings and earned the victory. Langdon, who improved to 1-0, allowed just one hit and struck out a pair. Freshman Frank Haverlack (Mantua, Western Reserve Academy) pitched the seventh and eighth, giving up one run on two hits. He walked two and struck out two. Freshman Andrew Brown (Centerville, Centerville) closed the game with a perfect ninth.

Dubuque starter Todd Whited (0-2) was charged with 10 runs on seven hits, walked eight and fanned two in 3 1/3 innings. Austin Linderwell surrendered five runs on seven hits over the next 3 2/3 innings. Aaron Laskowski gave up five runs (four earned) on one hits and walked three without recording an out, while Louis Dettorre pitched the final inning and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits.

The Etta Express returns to action Tuesday (March 23) afternoon when it visits #2 College of Wooster. The Fighting Scots enter with an 11-2 record.
