Marietta volleyball drops two on final day of Hiram Tournament

HIRAM, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team concluded its weekend with a pair of losses Saturday (Sept. 12) afternoon at the Hiram College Tournament. The Pioneers (5-3) began the day by falling 3-2 to the host Terriers and then closed the three-match tournament with a 3-0 setback against the University of Rochester.

Marietta fought back from two sets down to push Hiram to five sets before finally falling by four points in its first match of the day and second of the tournament. The Terriers won the match 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 15-11.

Freshman setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg, Walsh Jesuit) ran the offense throughout, finishing with 43 assists to go along with 6 kills. Jenkins' top weapons were sophomore right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Falls), who collected a team-best 19 kills, sophomore outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin, Dublin Scioto), who had 15 kills, and freshman outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic), who added 12 kills. Three aces from Weissling and two more from senior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) also aided the Pioneers.

Defensively, Holzworth led Marietta with 35 digs. Jenkins also pitched in with 17 digs, while Weissling had 14 digs. In addition, freshman middle blocker Sarah Campbell (Twinsburg, Twinsburg) collected 5 total blocks, while Storey, Weissling and Jenkins all added 2 total blocks.

Marietta was in each set against Rochester but could not score a win, falling 25-20, 25-21, 25-20.

Weissling led the way offensively with 11 kills and defensively with 13 digs against the Yellowjackets. Storey collected 8 kills, while Jenkins finished with 23 assists, 10 digs and 3 kills. Holzworth contribute two aces and 12 digs in the loss.

Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (Sept. 15) evening when the Pioneers play host to Washington & Jefferson College. The match, which begins at 7 p.m., is the team's home opener. In addition, it is Faculty Night at Ban Johnson Arena.
