Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College baseball team swept a key Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from John Carroll University Saturday (April 26) afternoon in front of a near-capacity crowd at Don Schaly Stadium. The Etta Express took game on by the score of 7-6 and then won the second game 6-4.
Marietta improves to 25-11 overall and 13-3 in the OAC. The Pioneers moved back into a tie for first place in the league standings with Heidelberg University, who split a twinbill Saturday with Otterbein University. John Carroll falls to 18-13 overall and 10-6 in the OAC.
The Pioneers and Blue Streaks treated everyone in attendance at the 16th annual Community Baseball Day to a pair of thrilling games. John Carroll's late-inning fireworks in both games kept the Pioneer faithful on the edge of their seats.
In the first game, Marietta led 7-1 heading into the eighth inning only to watch John Carroll plate five runs in its final two at bats before recording the last out on a deep fly ball to center field. In the second game, the Blue Streaks scored twice in the ninth to make things exciting.
(Minford/Lucasville Valley) executed the safety squeeze later in the inning to make it 6-1.
(Woodsfield/Monroe Central) picked up his second save of the season when he induced a double play to end the game.
The Pioneers scored two runs in each of the fourth fifth and seventh innings.
Ryan Hanahan (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) led off the fourth with a double and came around to score on an error. Designated hitter
Clint Roche (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) plated a run with a sac fly to tie the game, 2-2.
In the fifth, Demko led off with a double and stole third.
Mitch Geers (West Chester/Lakota East) laced a single to right scoring Demko. Roche knocked in Geers with a double to right center. Geers and Winpigler each hit solo home runs to right field in the seventh inning making it 6-2.
Brandon Maddern (5-2) started and got the loss. Maddern pitched 7.0 innings and allowed six runs on 11 hits. He walked one and struck out four. Mark Materise threw the eighth for the Blue Streaks retiring all three batters he faced.
Geers, Hanahan, Roche and Bukiewicz each finished with two hits in the game for the Etta Express.
