Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – Marietta College got a pair of complete-game performances on the mound as the No. 3 ranked Pioneers defeated Capital University 11-0 and 6-2 Saturday (April 6) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium.
The Etta Express is 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and tied with Baldwin Wallace for first place. Marietta is 15-5 overall. Capital drops to 12-9 on the season and 2-4 in the conference.
Senior
Evan Brockmeier (Marietta/Marietta) (3-1) scattered five base hits, all singles, en route to the first game shutout victory. He walked two and struck out five.
Marietta used two big innings in the first game scoring six runs in the third and five more in the sixth.
Left fielder
Josh Ungerbuehler (Cincinnati/Roger Bacon) got the scoring started with an RBI single up the middle scoring Brockmeier. The Pioneers' second run in the third inning scored on a balk.
Sophomore
Christian Demko (Xenia/Bellbrook) pated two more with a single to right field. Brian Gregorich scored on a bunt base hit by freshman
Tyler Packanik (Plant City, Fla./Newsome) and then Demko made it 6-0 when he stole home as part of a double steal.
The big blow in Marietta's five-run sixth was a triple by right fielder
Tim McCoy (Willoughby/St. Ignatius) that drove in two runs. Gregorich and
Aaron Hopper (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) also knocked in runs in the inning.
Justin Hoying (2-2) started on the mound for Capital and was tagged with the loss. He worked 5.1 innings and allowed 11 runs, only five earned, on 15 hits.
Hopper led the Pioneers' offense going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont), Brockmeier, Ungerbuehler and
Mitch Geers (West Chester/Lakota East) each collected two hits in the game.
The Crusaders took the lead in game two with a pair of runs in the third inning. Freshman
Mike Finlan (State College, Pa./State College) worked himself out of trouble getting a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Finlan (1-0) got his first career victory working 9.0 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Packanik led off the bottom of the third for the Pioneers with a walk. A failed pick off attempt sailed down the line allowing Packanik to move over to third base. He scored on a wild pitch to cut the Capital lead in half, 2-1.
Ungerbuehler tied the game, 2-2 with a lead off home run to left center in the fourth. Back to back doubles from Demko and Grilliot put Marietta ahead 3-2.
Capital's Garrett Griffin (1-1) walked the lead off hitter in the sixth inning ending his day. Griffin threw 5.0 innings and gave up four runs on five hits. He walked five Pioneers.
The Crusaders would walk five hitters in the sixth inning leading to a pair of Pioneer runs. Capital issued 10 walks in the game.
Grilliot gave Marietta an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double that scored Packanik and gave the Etta Express a 6-2 lead.
Grilliot was the only Pioneer with two hits in the game going 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Marietta travels to Washington and Jefferson College (Pa.) Sunday (April 7) for a varsity/junior varsity doubleheader. The nine-inning varsity game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
