WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Marietta College men's tennis team saw its season ended with a 5-0 loss at Otterbein University Tuesday (April 30) afternoon in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. The Pioneers finish the season with an overall record of 8-9.
Otterbein (15-6 overall) led 3-0 after doubles and sealed the victory with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles. The Cardinals were leading the four unfinished singles matches.
Otterbein posted identical 8-2 wins at the top two doubles positions. Will Willson and David Seckel defeated Marietta's
Ashton Whiteleather (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) at No. 1, while Zach McDivitt and Ryan Shutt were victorious at No. 2 over
Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York).
The Cardinal's top doubles team also accounted for their two wins in singles play. Willson beat Whiteleather at No. 1, 6-0 and 6-1. Seckel posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Daub to clinch the match for Otterbein.
In the unfinished matches, Shutt was leading Schaeffer at No. 2, 6-0 and 5-2. McDivitt had a 6-0, 2-2 edge on Knauff at No. 4 and DeVore had won the first set, 6-4, over Grant at No. 5. In the No. 6 singles match, Tyler Gibbons was beating
Taimur Ahmed (Islamabad, Pakistan/Froebels International) 6-0 and 5-0.
Four seniors finished their playing careers in the Navy Blue and White. The Pioneers say goodbye to Ahmed, Daub, Knauff and
Abdul Sheikh (Columbus/Saint Johnsbury Acad.).
