ALLIANCE, Ohio – Marietta College lost to the University of Mount Union in Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis action Wednesday (April 24) afternoon by the score of 8-1. The Pioneers fall to 8-7 on the season and 3-5 in the OAC. The Purple Raiders move to 13-5 overall and 4-4 in league play.
Freshman
Ashton Whiteleather (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) picked up Marietta's lone point with a victory at No. 1 singles. Whiteleather posted a 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) win over Nate Fockler in the top spot.
The Purple Raiders took an early 3-0 lead after doubles. Fockler and his brother Nick defeated Whiteleather and
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) at No. 1 doubles by the score of 8-1.
At No. 2, Malcolm Leake and Dominic Marino were 8-2 winners over
Teddy Daub (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Karl Grant (Elmhurst, Ill./York). Ben Swope and Josh Duerr completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 against Marietta's
Andy Knauff (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca).
Mount Union recorded straight-set wins in the bottom five singles matches. Nick Fockler downed Schaeffer at No. 2, 6-1 and 7-5, while Leake was a 6-1 and 6-0 victor at No. 3 versus Daub.
Knauff dropped a hard-fought match at No. 4, 6-2 and 7-6 (7-2), against Patrick Yackmack. Swope and Marino took the Nos. 5 and 6 matches, respectively. Swope defeated Grant, 6-2 and 6-4, and Marino downed
Taimur Ahmed (Islamabad, Pakistan/Froebels International), 6-3 and 6-0.
