Marietta wraps up La Roche College title

Senior Becca Holzworth named Tournament MVP

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Marietta College volleyball team remained undefeated and claimed the La Roche College Tournament title with two victories on Saturday (Sept. 5) afternoon. The Pioneers, who improved to 5-0, defeated Franciscan University 3-2 (21-25, 25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11) in pool play and then Washington & Jefferson College 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-21) in the championship game.

Marietta senior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) was named the Tournament MVP, while sophomore right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Falls) joined her on the All-Tournament Team.

Holzworth led the defense in both matches, finishing with 18 digs against Franciscan and 13 more against Washington & Jefferson. Storey, meanwhile, collected 10 kills and six blocks against the Presidents.

Sophomore outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin, Dublin Scioto) paced the offense with 16 kills and three service aces while also adding 18 digs in the first match of the day. Freshman setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg, Walsh Jesuit) dished out 44 assists to go along with 12 digs, three blocks and five kills against Franciscan. In addition, freshman outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic) contributed 13 kills and freshman Alexa Baudo (Mentor, Mayfield) had seven blocks in that victory.

Against Washington & Jefferson, Sawicki matched Storey with a team-best 10 kills. Jenkins finished with 22 assists and three service aces. Freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls, Kenston) also had three aces, while Baudo had nine total blocks in the match.

Marietta is back in action Friday (Sept. 11) when it competes at the Hiram College Tournament. The Pioneers will take on Walsh University at 5 p.m. Marietta will then battle host HIram on Saturday (Sept. 12) at 12 p.m. and then University of Rochester at 4 p.m.
