ADRIAN, Mich. — Third-seeded Marietta College and second-seeded the College of Wooster renewed their rivalry in game six of the
2009 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Tournament on Saturday (May 16) afternoon. The winner's bracket battle was postponed on Friday (May 15) night and then delayed over an hour on Saturday because of rain. Once it started, it was all Fighting Scots as they defeated the Pioneers 13-3 to become the lone unbeaten team in the six-team tournament. Saturday's win marked just the sixth time in 17 meetings that Wooster defeated Marietta in regional play.
Marietta (30-16) must turn around and play sixth-seeded Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. A Pioneer victory would setup a rematch with the Fighthing Scots (37-8) on Sunday (May 17) afternoon.
Wooster out hit Marietta 16-6 and overcame two errors in the victory. The Fighting Scots stranded 13 runners, while the Pioneers left four on base in the loss.
A lead off double from sophomore John Snyder (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) (Altoona, Pa.) led to a run for the Etta Express in the top of the first. Freshman Kyle Lindquist (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) (Columbus/Worthingon Kilbourne) sacrificed him to third with a bunt. Senior Cameron Cimino (Boardman/Boardman) (Boardman) then drove Snyder home with a RBI ground out to the right side.
Wooster responded with three runs on four hits in its first at-bat of the game to take a 3-1 lead after one frame. Stu Beath started the scoring with a solo blast to right, while Zack Vesco and Michael DeBord both produced RBI single to right center field in the inning.
The Fighting Scots plated five runs, four with two outs, to extend their lead to 8-1 after four frames. Matthew Pierce had a big two-run double down the left field line in the rally. Wooster struck again with two outs in the fifth. Beath drilled a two-run double down the right field line to give his squad the 10-1 advantage. Wooster added a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to increase its lead to 13-1.
Junior Matt DeSico (Euclid/Euclid) (Euclid) drilled a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to drive in senior Brennan Cribbins (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) and Cimino but that was as close as Marietta would get as it fell 13-3.
Senior Jason Baumler (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) started the game but lasted just 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander was tagged for eight runs on 10 hits. Baumler (3-4) walked three and hit another in the loss. Junior Nate Eschbaugh (Marietta/Marietta) (Marietta) relieved him and allowed three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out two in 2 2/3 frames. Freshman Bill Fullen (Williamsport/Westfall) (Williamsport/Westfall) pitched the eighth and gave up two runs on one hit in the inning.
Wooster's senior starter Mark Miller limited Marietta's bats to just one run on three hits while striking out six over seven innings to improve to 9-1. Tanner Hall pitched a scoreless eighth, while Nate Gemberling-John gave up two runs before getting the final out in the ninth.
Cimino paced Marietta with two hits in four at-bats. Beath had a huge day at the plate for Wooster; he finished 5-for-5 with four RBI. Sean Karpen, Sutton and Vesco all added a pair of hits in the win.
