WILMINGTON, Ohio — Marietta College freshman
Jayshon Irvin (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian) was named the Most Outstanding Sprinter of the Meet after winning both the 100m and 200m Dashes to highlight the Pioneers' performance on Saturday (April 25) at the
2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Wilmington College. [

Head Coach Derek Stanley's program maintained its placement from a year ago with a fifth place finish (82 points) in the women's competition and a sixth place finish (60 points) in the men's standings. Ohio Northern University swept the championship after its women compiled 125 points and its men totaled 172 points.
Irvin, the first Pioneer athlete to earn an individual award at the OAC Championship since the program was reinstated, was the top qualified in both of his individual events heading into Saturday's finals. He picked up his first title after crossing the line in the 100m Dash in 11.20 seconds. Irvin then completed the sweep with a first place time of 22.43 seconds in the 200m Dash. He earned All-OAC honors for his efforts in both events.
Senior Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) was Marietta's third individual champion after she won the Hammer Throw for the second straight year. She finished with a top mark of 45.21m (148-04). Kovacevich then set a school record in her final throw in the Shot Put with a mark of 12.41m (40-08.75), which placed her fourth.
Junior Cody Thomas (North Olmsted) gave Ohio Northern's three-time NCAA Champion Jimmy O'Brien a run for his money and finished with All-OAC honors after taking second place in the 800m Run. Thomas, who led midway through the final lap, crossed the line in 1:55.05.
Senior Brian Pallini (Medina) earned All-OAC honors in both the Shot Put and the Hammer Throw after a pair of third place finishes. He had a top mark of 15.15m (49-08.50) in the Shot Put and then 48.81m (160-02) in the Hammer Throw.
Sophomore Matt Hickman (St. Marys, W.Va.) also earned All-OAC honors after taking third place in the 100m Dash. He crossed the line in 11.33 seconds.
Senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg) finished runner-up and was named All-OAC in the 400m Hurdles after covering the lap in 1:04.85.
Junior Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) also took second place in her event; she finished the 3,000m Steeplechase in 12:09.72 to earn All-OAC recognition.
Senior Jessi Larrison (Batavia) received All-OAC honors in the 800m Run. The 2006 800m champion crossed the line in third place with a time of 2:18.25.
Freshman Ashley Bault (Atwater/Waterloo) added a third place finish in the Triple Jump after finishing with a mark of 10.44m (34-04.00).
Marietta's women 4x400m Relay, which featured freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic), junior Christi Tims (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls), Larrison and Spencer, also earned All-OAC honors after its second place finish on Saturday. The Pioneers combined for a time of 3:58.31.
The men's 4x400m Relay capped off Marietta's day with a third place finish in the final event, which earned the foursome All-OAC honors as well. Freshman Chase Oberfield (Heath), sophomore Josh Bibb (Marietta), Thomas and junior Anthony Williams (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) combined to run a time of 3:20.97. There performance was the best time since the reinstatement and just over one second off the school record.
Select Marietta athletes now turn their attention to qualifying for the 2009 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship, which will take place May 21-23 in Marietta, Ohio. The Pioneers will compete in a series of last chance meets, beginning with the Dragon Invitational, hosted by Tiffin University on Tuesday (April 28).
