WORCESTER, Mass. — The Marietta College men's rowing team had a strong showing against a field of national ranked crews Saturday (Apr. 18) at the Remley Cup hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Lake Quinsigamond.

The field included No. 1 ranked Trinity, No. 5 Colby, No. 6 Marietta, No. 9 Ithaca, and No. 10 WPI. The schools went head-to-head in a varsity 8+ race and a second varsity 8+ race. The top three finishers in both races were Trinity, Marietta and Colby. Ithaca was fourth in the varsity 8+ followed by WPI, while WPI took fourth in the second varsity 8+ race with Ithaca finishing fifth.

Top ranked Trinity never left any doubt controlling the varsity 8+ race from start to finish. After a slow start, the Pioneers were in last place over the first part of the course. Through the middle 1000 meters, Marietta ran down Ithaca and WPI and eventually passed Colby.

"We haven't been super-fast off the line yet this year," Marietta head coach Greg Myhr said. "We settled down by the 500-meter mark and started to hit our stride."

The second varsity 8+ race was similar with Trinity leading the entire race. Marietta ran down Colby earlier and managed to stay with Trinity throughout the race.

"Overall, both crews came off the water feeling confident," Myhr said. "We'll see if we can keep it rolling tomorrow against another strong field."

Marietta is right back on the water at Lake Quinsigamond for the Baker Cup on Sunday (Apr. 19).
