PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — The Marietta College men's rowing team opened the fall racing season Saturday (Oct. 3) at the Head of the Ohio Regatta. The Pioneers took second place in the open 8+, fifth in the open 4+, and swept the pairs.

"The boys raced well today, sweeping the pairs, fifth in the coxed four and second and sixth in the varsity 8. A ten-second penalty cost us the win in the eight, but it's encouraging to see how well the crew raced and that they can generate good speed this early in the season," Marietta head coach Robert Weber said. "We're slowly building into our training program, and I feel really good about where we are and where we can go. It should be an exciting year ahead!"

The day started on a high note as Marietta had the top four finishers in the men's collegiate open 2- division. Nicholas Sarno (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and Spencer Mossman (Oklahoma City, Okla.) won the race with a time of 14:22.268, nine seconds ahead of the second-place boat. Rowan Schulde (Litchfield, Conn./Litchfield) and Alexander Cathcart (Nyack, N.Y./Nyack) were second followed by Michael Swale (Vienna, Va./James Madison)s and Nicolas Invernizzi (Lambare, Paraguay/Colegio Cristo Rey), and Ryan Campbell (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jat) and Nicholas Pachete (Monroeville, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic).

The Pioneers entered three crews in the open 4+ race and came away with a fifth, tenth, and fifteenth place showing. Fordham had the top two finishers with the winning crew posting a time of 13:38.219. Marietta's "B" entry was fifth with a time of 13:51.462. The Pioneers' "C" boat was tenth, and the "A" crew was fifteenth.

Fordham also won the open 8+ race with a time of 12:11.072. If not for a 10 second penalty, the Navy Blue and White would have claimed the top spot. With the penalty, Marietta placed second with a time of 12:15.676. The Pioneers' second boat finished in 12:50.944, good for sixth place.

Marietta is back in action next Saturday (Oct. 10) at home for the Head of the Muskingum.
