WEST WINDSOR, New Jersey — The Marietta College women's rowing team won a gold medal at the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Championships Sunday (May 4) afternoon. The Pioneers were victorious in the varsity 4+ race.
"We had a great race this past weekend. The wind was challenging, making for some pretty choppy water on the lake," Marietta head coach
Annie Devorak said. "I'm so happy with this crew and what they've accomplished this year. We're all looking forward to the Dav Vail next weekend to race against crews we haven't see yet this year."
The Pioneers got off to a rough start as a gust of wind blew the Navy Blue and White off course. After quickly regaining their composure, the Pioneers slowly reeled in the other crews passing Franklin and Marshall and St. Mary's.
The race came down to two boats with Marietta trying to shake Catholic. The Pioneers broke away and opened a significant gap in the last 500 meters.
Marietta posted a winning time of 9:00.639, followed by Catholic (9:14.165), St. Mary's (9:30.575), and Franklin and Marshall (9:39.041).
Four Pioneers received awards at the conclusion of the Championship.
Lily Sands (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) was named second team All-MARC.
Avery Kurman (Galloway, N.J./Atlantic County Insitute of Technology) received All-MARC Novice honors.
Katie Lively (New Matamoras, Ohio/River) and
Phoebe Smith (Knoxville, Tenn./L & N STEM Academy) both received Academic All-MARC honors.
The Pioneers are back in action at the Dad Vail Regatta Friday and Saturday (May 9-10) in New Jersey.
