ITHACA, New York — The Marietta College men's rowing team had a solid day of racing in the Cayuga Duels Saturday (Mar. 30) afternoon.
"All in all, today was a good day for Marietta Men's Rowing. We had some excellent racing, and we also learned some things that will need to be addressed," Marietta head coach
Greg Myhr said. "The morning races saw our 1V winning over Hamilton after being a length down at the 1000m mark, and our 2V also beating Hamilton, leading wire to wire. Both eights posted the fastest times of the morning in their respective categories."
In head-to-head racing, Marietta's varsity 8+ crew defeated Hamilton by over eight seconds. The Pioneers crossed the line in 6:43.9 with Hamilton posting a time of 6:52.2. In the afternoon, Hobart (6:46.8) beat Marietta (6:54.1) by seven-plus seconds.
"In the afternoon racing, we didn't really find the gear we needed against Hobart in the 1V and, as opposed to the morning, we came away with the slowest time of the day in the category," Myhr said. "In the 2V, we pushed out to a length advantage at the 1000m mark, but we failed to put it away and Hobart came back to win by less than a second."
The second varsity 8+ crew beat Hobart's 3V and Hamilton in the morning before losing to Hobart's 2V in the afternoon. The Pioneers posted a time of 6:57.2 in the morning with Hobart 3V finishing in 7:17.9, and Hamilton crossing the line in 7:27.9. In the afternoon, Hobart won with a time of 6:47.4 with the Navy Blue and White finishing in 6:48.3.
"The highpoint of the afternoon was our 3V four, which won convincingly against Hobart and Ithaca," Myhr said. "This was a hugely valuable trip for the Pioneers."
Marietta won the varsity 4+ race by less than five seconds. The Pioneers finished with a time of 7:45.9 with Hobart's 4V posting a time of 7:50.1 and Ithaca crossed the line in 8:07.3.
Marietta heads to the West Coast for the San Diego Crew Classic next Saturday and Sunday (April 6-7).
