MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's rowing team hosted Adrian, Mercyhurst and Purdue for the Marietta Invitational Saturday (April 22). Racing started on the 2,000-meter Ohio River course but was moved to the Muskingum River 2,000-meter course due to racing conditions.
"Our varsity eight came out a little flat this morning, which you can't do against a team like Mercyhurst, and they took it to us," Marietta head coach
Greg Myhr said. "We regrouped nicely in the afternoon and won a tightly contested race against Purdue for the Challenge Cup. We weren't separated by more than a seat with Purdue until about 500 meters to go and we won by nearly a length in the end."
Mercyhurst pulled away early from the Pioneers in the morning varsity 8+ race on the Ohio River. The Lakers posted a winning time of 5:59.5, well ahead of Marietta's 6:14.3.
The Pioneers bounced back and defeated Purdue in the 65th annual Challenge Cup race on the Muskingum River. Marietta crossed the line in 5:57.1 with Purdue finishing in 6:00.6.
"We were pleasantly surprised with how competitive our fours were with Mercyhurst. In the final, our B and A fours took second and third respectively behind Mercyhurst's winning heavyweight four, but ahead of the fourth place Mercyhurst lightweight four," Myhr said. "It was really a very nice job of racing in both the morning and afternoon. We are just now starting to come into our own."
In the first heat of fours, Mercyhurst edged Marietta B at the line. Mercyhurst finished in 6:53.2, followed by Marietta B (6:56.9) and Marietta A (7:05.5). The second heat was won by Mercyhurst in 6:27.0) with Marietta C in second with a time of 6:32.6, and Adrian third with a time of 6:40.8)
Mercyhurst's heavyweight four won the final with a time of 6:21.8). Marietta B was second with a time of 6:26.1) followed by Marietta A (6:26.5), Mercyhurst LW (6:38.1), and Marietta C (6:46.6).
Marietta and Adrian will face off in several races Sunday (April 23) morning.
