MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped a home contest to Mount St. Joseph, 1-0, on Sunday (Sept. 11) afternoon. With the loss the Pioneers are now 0-2-1 overall and the Lions improve to 1-4 on the season.
"I'm extremely proud of this team today," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin. "We played some fantastic soccer and we look more comfortable in our system each day. It was a game of missed opportunities. Time to reflect and bounce back Wednesday at W&J."
The first half was a scoreless battle. Mount St. Joseph out shot Marietta nine to three but the Lions only registered two shots on goal. Marietta was able to muster only one shot on goal in the first half, off the foot of
Anna Bardwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central). The Lions won the first half corner kick battle 2-1
The Lions came out much more aggressive in the second half as much of the action took place in the Marietta half of the field. By the 85
th minute, the Lions had doubled up the Pioneers in shots (10 to 5), but still no points on the board. Mount St. Joseph was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area after Marietta committed a foul. Mackenzie Schneeman set up and sent a shot to the upper left hand corner of the goal, just sneaking it past the fingers of Pioneer goalkeeper
Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren). The Pioneers could not rally in the remaining time and would go down to defeat, 1-0.
Miller played all 90 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced 22 shots, seven of which were on goal, and made six saves.
The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (Sept. 14) when they meet Washington and Jefferson for a road contest, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
