MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's rowing team welcomed the No. 13 ranked University of Wisconsin to the Ohio River Saturday (April 2) morning. The two squared off in three races, including the varsity 8+, second varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ crews.
"Today was a perfect day for racing – no wind, and only moderate current on the Ohio River," Marietta head coach
Greg Myhr said. "And the Valley Gem provided an excellent finish line platform for our spectators."
Wisconsin swept the three races winning with open water over the Pioneers in each race. The varsity eights were first on the water. The Badgers crossed the line in 5:18.2 with Marietta finishing in 5:40.2.
"Wisconsin is a strong, well-coached team, and they absolutely hammered it down the racecourse today," Myhr said. "I was proud of the grit our guys showed and know this will lead to faster times and more competitive racing, this season and beyond."
Wisconsin won the second varsity race with a time of 5:24.7. The Pioneers posted a time of 5:42.2. In the varsity fours race, Wisconsin A won with a time of 5:55.2, followed by Wisconsin B (5:59.9), Wisconsin C (6:02.2) and Marietta (6:36.1).
"This was a tough week for our squad, as we knew it would be. We got home from California on Monday night and had to get right back at it in preparation for today's racing," Myhr said. "We had a few illnesses that led to somewhat re-worked line-ups in all of our boats."
Marietta travels to Virginia next weekend for the Occoquan Invitational on Sunday (April 10).
