FAIRFAX, Virginia — The Marietta College men's rowing team raced in the Occoquan Collegiate Invitational hosted by Navy on Sunday (April 10) on the Occoquan Reservoir. The nine participating schools competed in varsity and second varsity eights, as well as third varsity fours.
"It was a windy day with rough racing conditions including a headwind and whitecaps through much of the course," Marietta head coach
Greg Myhr said. "The bright part of the morning was our 3V four winning a slugfest with Hobart."
In the morning session Marietta's varsity eight finished third in a three-boat race. Georgetown, ranked No. 23 in the latest Intercollegiate Rowing Association rankings, won the 2,000-meter race with a time of 6:45.58, followed by No. 28 Jacksonville (7:00.8) and Marietta (7:12.6).
Marietta and Georgetown faced off in the second varsity eight race and the Hoyas came away with the victory crossing the line in 7:05.07 with the Pioneers finishing in 7:26.17.
The Pioneers' four defeated Hobart in the morning 2,000-meter race and then swept a series of short pieces in the afternoon. Marietta posted a winning time of 8:12.5 in the morning race with Hobart finishing in 8:19.2.
"The afternoon racing was night and day better than the morning. Both eights grabbed an early lead. In the 2V, the other boats caught us and got ahead, but could not get away. We almost reeled Jacksonville back in in the last 500-meters, falling by half a length. Our 1V moved steadily away from St. Joe's and then back through Jacksonville to beat them by a half-length."
The first and second varsity eights ran a second 2,000-meter race in the afternoon. Marietta's first varsity eight placed third of five boats in the B final, while the second varsity eight crew finished fourth of four boats in its B final.
No. 21 ranked Holy Cross won the first varsity race with a time of 6:56.9, followed by Florida Tech (6:58.8) Marietta (7:02.1), Jacksonville (7:04.0) and St. Joseph's (7:18.7).
Holy Cross won the second varsity eight race as well posting a winning time of 7:06.9, followed by Hobart (7:12.0), Jacksonville (7:13.9) and Marietta (7:15.8).
Marietta will race in the Midwest Duals hosted by Adrian College on Saturday (April 16) in Addison, Michigan.
