SAN DIEGO, California — The Marietta College men's rowing team traveled cross country to race in the 49th San Diego Crew Classic. The Pioneers entered the varsity 8+ and second varsity 8+ divisions and competed in the preliminary heats on Saturday (March 26).
"We had good racing by both crews today," Marietta head coach
Greg Myhr said. "We have a lot more to do, but our guys are fired up to race tomorrow."
The varsity 8+ was first on the Mission Bay water and the Pioneers finished third in the second of three heats. Nereus, a Dutch national team development boat, won the heat with a time of 6:16.309 with open water on Gonzaga (6:24.350) crossing in second place and advancing to the Grand Final.
The Pioneers place third and will row in the second level final on Sunday. Marietta posted a time of 6:37.684 holding off Orange Coast (6:41.022) by a boat length. UC Davis finished fifth in the heat with a time of 6:51.777, well behind the rest of the field.
Marietta's second varsity 8+ shell earned a spot in Sunday's Grand Final with a third place showing in the heats. UC San Diego won the heat in 6:28.526 with Marist more than a boat length behind finishing in 6:33.855. The Navy Blue and White crossed in 6:41.794 besting Bates (6:43.340) by less than two seconds.
The varsity 8+ crew will race in the Cal Cup Final at 10:07 a.m. PDT (1:07 p.m. EDT) on Sunday. The second varsity 8+ crew will race at 11:03 a.m. PDT (2:03 p.m. EDT).
