Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer defeated by Ohio Wesleyan

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought game to Ohio Wesleyan, 1-0 on Marietta Field on Sunday (Sept. 5) afternoon.  The Pioneers are now 0-2 on the season, and the Battling Bishops improve to 3-0 overall.

Head Coach Sean Kaighin, "I thought we played really well today, and we are proud of our ladies!  It's unfortunate that in this game the scoreboard doesn't always reflect on the team who performed better.  We will bounce back and look to get one from Olivet on the road."

The first half was a scoreless battle in which each team mustered three shots.  The back line of Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook), Madi Wagner (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green), Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), and Anna Bardwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) held Ohio Wesleyan to  a pair of shots on goal and Marietta had one.  The Pioneers best chance to score came from a set piece off the leg of Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont).  The free kick from 35 yards out required a save, and the ball was loose in the box but, Marietta was unable to convert the rebound opportunity.

Katie Delaney (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) started the first half in goal, and Drew Ultican (Baltimore, Ohio/Pickerington North) subbed in, each goalie made a save in the half.

The Battling Bishops took the lead in the51st minute of the match.  Ohio Wesleyan got on the board when Makayla Watkins scored from the right side of the box to upper left corner off an assist from Jaelyn Dodson.  The Pioneers had two shots on goal in the second half, with Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) and Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) proving the scoring opportunities.

Ultican played 82 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced nine shots, five of which were on goal, and made four saves.

The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (Sept 8) when they travel to take on Olivet, with kick off scheduled for 4 p.m.
