Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer beaten by Piedmont

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team was beaten 2-0 by Piedmont on Saturday (Sept. 11) afternoon on Marietta Field.  With the loss the Pioneers are now 0-3 overall and the Lions improve to 2-1-1 on the season.

"Every game we get more comfortable possessing and being patient, but that's not going to get results," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin.  "These ladies need to come out hungry for goals."

Piedmont opened the scoring in the 30th minute of the match.  Anya Olsen played a ball over the top of the Marietta defense, and Gabbie Hayes ran onto the ball and placed her shot over the Pioneer goalie Drew Ultican (Baltimore, Ohio/Pickerington North), to make the score 1-0.  Marietta had four first half shots, with the best chance to score coming from Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) but goalie Madi Wilson made the save.

The Pioneers created the first opportunity to score in the second half when Lydia Vach (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) got behind the defense and had a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie, but once again Wilson was up to the challenge.  In the final minute of the match Hailey Tigue scored a rebound goal off a shot from Abby Ryan, to make the score 2-0 in the favor Piedmont.

With 14 seconds to play in the match Madi Wagner (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) played a through ball to Sarah Crim (Mount Clare, W.Va./Byrd) who placed the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was called off due to offsides.  Marietta lost the match 2-0.

Ultican and Katie Delany each played a half in goal for the Pioneers, the duo faced 11 shots, eight of which were on goal, and made six saves.

Marietta will return to the field Sunday (Sept. 12) when they host Berea College, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
