CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped a road contest to Mount St. Joseph 2-1, on Saturday (Sept 18) afternoon. With the loss the Pioneers are now 1-4 overall and the Lions improve to 3-4 on the season.
"Despite the early goals allowed, I am so proud of the resiliency our young women showed! We battled back, scored a fantastic team goal, and continued to beat at their door for the remainder of the game," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin. "We've got things to improve on. So we'll enjoy our day of rest tomorrow and turn our sights towards throttling Washington and Jefferson at home Wednesday."
Mount St. Joseph took the lead in the 12th minute when Catherine Hatfield played a ball over the top of the Marietta back line to Julia Herzog. Herzog placed her shot in the lower near post corner to beat Pioneer goalie
Katie Delaney (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont).
Hatfield doubled the Lions lead in the 13th minute of the match when she dispossessed a Marietta defender and placed her shot in the upper right corner of the goal, to make the score 2-0 in favor of Mount St. Joseph.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute of the match when
Kaylie Ward (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) took a pass from
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) in the midfield. Ward took one touch and ripped a shot from 28 yards out, and found the upper right corner of the goal. Marietta entered the intermission behind, 2-1.
The second half was a scoreless battle. Each team was able to muster only one second half shot. The lone Pioneer shot in the second half came from
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster). The Lions won the second half corner kick battle 5-0.
Delaney played all 90 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced five shots, four of which were on goal, and made a pair of saves.
The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (Sept. 22) when they host Washington and Jefferson, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
