Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer earns draw with Washington and Jefferson

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team went to extra time to earn a 1-1 draw with Washington and Jefferson on Wednesday (Sept. 22) evening on Marietta Field.  With the tie the Pioneers are now 1-4-1 overall and the Presidents are 3-4-1 on the season.

"You have to commend a team that battles from behind to get a result.  Of course, we wanted the win, but our ladies did well to compete and play our style," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin.  "We've got a tough challenge ahead of us this weekend.  We'll embrace the challenge and prepare for CMU."

Marietta created the first two chances of the match when Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) had a pair of shots, one of which forced Washington and Jefferson goalie Gabrielle Llyod to make a diving save.

The Presidents opened the scoring in the 21st minute of the match when Makenna Mann gathered a bouncing ball in the box to find the back of the net.  The ball was played into the Pioneer box by Peyton Behling.

Marietta and Washington and Jefferson each tallied four shots on goal in the half.  The other Pioneer shots came off the foot of Kayla Stischok (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview).  Marietta entered the intermission behind, 1-0.

Midway through the second half the Pioneers tied the game in the 68th minute of the match.  Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) tied the match when she shot from the top of the 18-yard box, the ball skipped passed the President goalie and into the lower right corner of the net.

The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of regulation and the teams would need extra time to determine a winner. The first extra time period was a defensive battle, as neither team was able to register a shot in the first 10 minutes of overtime.

The second overtime period saw much more action.  Marietta out shot Washington and Jefferson 5-2 in the final 10 minutes of play.  The Pioneers best chance came from Emmah Kronenbitter (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville), she had a shot from just outside the six-yard box that went wide of the target.  The final chance of the game came off the head of Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), but it went wide of the frame.  Marietta and the Presidents tied 1-1 at the end of overtime.

Drew Ultican (Baltimore, Ohio/Pickerington North) played all 110 minutes in net for the Pioneers, she faced 17 shots, six of which were on goal, and made five saves in the game.

Marietta will return to the field Sunday (Sept. 26) when they travel to take on Carnegie Mellon, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
