Women’s Soccer drops 2021 season opener at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped its 2021 season opener 3-1, on the road at the College of Wooster on Wednesday (Sept. 1) evening.  The Pioneers are now 0-1 on the season and the Fighting Scots are 1-0 overall.

"We feel our ladies showed a lot of growth for our first game back," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin.  "We are young and we had some mistakes, but we will learn from them and continue to improve."

Wooster scored the opening goal of the match in the 27th minute.  The Fighting Scots got on the board when Naomi Mann played a ball into the box and Helena Janczak slotted the ball passed Marietta goalie Katie Delaney (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont).

The Pioneers tallied four first half shots, and managed to put three of them on target.  The shots on goal came from Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch), Kaylie Ward (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls), and Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview).

Marietta battled back, in the second half, to tie the game in the 60th minute of the match.  Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) found the back of the net with her first career goal to make the score 1-1.  Madi Wagner (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) got the play started with a long ball to Kontul, who took a touch around a defender a ripped a shot from 25 yards out and beat the Wooster goalie.

The Fighting Scots regained the lead in the 68th minute of the match, and Wooster scored the final goal of the game three minutes later, to lead 3-1.  The Pioneers battled for the remainder of the game, but fell 3-1.

Delaney played a majority of the game in goal for Marietta, she faced 25 shots, 14 of which were on goal, and made 11 saves.  Drew Ultican (Baltimore, Ohio/Pickerington North) played the final 15 minutes in net and did not face a shot on goal.

The Pioneers will be back in action Sunday (Sept. 5) when they host Ohio Wesleyan, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
