WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The Marietta College men's rowing team opened competition in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Friday (May 28) morning on Mercer Lake. The Pioneers have three entries in the 2021 championship competing in the heavyweight varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight divisions.
Following the morning time trials, the semifinal heats were contested in the afternoon to determine who would advance to Saturday's finals.
The Pioneer varsity eight crew placed sixth in its semifinal and will race in tomorrow fifth level final. Holy Cross won the semi with a time of 6:47.225. Marist was second with a time of 6:50.439 and will join Holy Cross in the Grand Final. UC San Diego took third with a time of 6:52.059, followed by Stetson (6:52.579, Jacksonville (7:01.779) and Marietta (7:03.725).
The Navy Blue and White second varsity eight was edged by Oregon State in its semifinal and will race in the fourth level final on Saturday. Oregon State recorded a time of 6:50.914 with the Pioneers finishing in 6:54.155. Saint Josephs (7:06.661) and Bates (7:10.184) rounded out the semifinal field.
In the third varsity eight semifinal, the Pioneers finished fifth and will race in the third level final tomorrow. Dartmouth won the semi with a time of 6:35.631, followed by Navy (6:42.745), Saint Josephs (6:46.785), George Washington (6:54.516), Marietta (7:18.089) and Hobart (7:41.225).
The tentative race schedule for Marietta on Saturday includes the third varsity eight third level final at 8:00 a.m. Marietta's second varsity eight will race in the fourth level final at 8:40 a.m. and the varsity eight will race in the fifth level final at 9:20 a.m.
