PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Marietta College men's rowing team returned to the famed Schuylkill River for the first time in 18 months when the Pioneers went head-to-head with Saint Joseph's University and Drexel University Saturday (April 10).
The Pioneers faced off against Saint Joseph's for three races in the morning. In the varsity 8 race the Hawks beat Marietta to the finish line by nearly two boat lengths crossing in 5:54.7 with the Pioneers finishing in 6:00.8.
The closest race of the day came in the second varsity 8 duel. The two crews raced neck in neck throughout the entire 2,000 meters with Saint Joseph's edging the Pioneers by two seconds for the victory. The Hawks posted a time of 5:58.6 with Marietta finishing in 6:00.3.
Saint Joseph's third varsity 8 crew won easily with a time of 6:06.6 to Marietta's time of 6:29.1.
In the afternoon, Marietta and Drexel competed in the same three races with Drexel winning each event. The Dragons won the varsity 8 race by two boat lengths posting a time of 6:00.5. Marietta finished in 6:12.6.
The second varsity 8 race featured threw shells with Drexel entering its 2V and freshman eights. Drexel's second varsity 8 boat won the race in a time of 6:08.0, followed by the Drexel freshman crew (6:09.1) and Marietta (6:14.3).
Drexel also ran two crews in the third varsity 8 race grabbing the top two spots in the standings. Drexel's 3V boat posted a winning time of 6:19.8, followed by the Drexel 4v (6:24.2) and Marietta (6:29.1).
The Pioneers take on Adrian and Mercyhurst next Saturday (April 17) from Erie, Pa.
