Women’s Soccer drops OAC match at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Otterbein, 3-0 on Wednesday (Oct. 6) evening.  With the loss the Pioneers fall to 1-7-1 overall and 0-2 in OAC play and with the win the Cardinals are 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.

"A very difficult challenge for us tonight against a very talented Otterbein team," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin.  "We'll learn from our mistakes and move on.  Our destiny is still in our control moving forward.  We are adamant to compete for the top six."

Otterbein opened the scoring in the sixth minute of the match.  Payton Kauffman scored the opener for the Cardinals off a corner to was loose in the box until she placed the ball in the lower left corner.  Otterbein took a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute of the match behind a goal from Lauren Alley.  Alley dribbled through the midfield and hit the ball from 25 yards out and placed her shot in the low left corner.  

Marietta created four first half shots, as Madi Wagner (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green), Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont), and Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) created the chances.  The Pioneers were unable find the back of the net and entered the intermission behind, 2-0.  

The Cardinals scored their third goal of the match in the 77th minute.  Mackenzie Peeke dribbled down the right side of the field outside the 18-yard box and hit a shot that went over the head of Marietta goalie Drew Ultican (Baltimore, Ohio/Pickerington North).  Otterbein won the match 3-0.  

Katie Delaney (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) and Ultican split time in the net for Marietta.  Each goalie played a half in net, Delaney made six saves in the first half and Ultican made one save in the second half.  

The Pioneers will return to action Saturday (Oct. 9) when they travel to take on Heidelberg with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
