Women’s Soccer victorious over Muskingum

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Muskingum University on Wednesday (Oct. 27) evening on Marietta Field.  With the win the Pioneers are now 2-11-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 2-16 overall and 0-8 in OAC action.

"All around great team effort tonight.  We dominated possession for most of the game and we created a lot of threatening scoring opportunities," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin.  "The ladies are booming with confidence and we will ride that into the season finale against Baldwin Wallace."

Marietta opened the scoring in the 38th minute of the match when Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) found the back of the net.  Madi Wagner (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) got the play started as she found the feet of Szawranskyj, Szawranskyj turned passed a defender and ripped a shot into the lower right corner of the goal from just outside the 18 yard box box.

The Pioneers out shot Muskingum 15-4 in the opening half.  The Marietta defense only allowed two shots on goal in the half, and goalie Drew Ultican (Baltimore, Ohio/Pickerington North) made both saves.  The Pioneers entered the intermission on top, 1-0.

Marietta doubled its advantage in the 54th minute of the match on a goal from Emmah Kronenbitter (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville)Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) dribbled through the midfield and played a perfect through ball to Kronenbitter at the top of the box, Kronenbitter took one touch to set up the shot, and placed the ball in the lower left corner of the goal, to make the score 2-0.

The back line of Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook), Wagner, Lydia Vach (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami), and Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) helped goalie Drew Ultican (Baltimore, Ohio/Pickerington North) earn the second shutout of the season for the Pioneers.  Ultican played all 90 minutes in goal, she faced 14 shots, eight of which were on goal, and made eight saves.

Marietta will return to the field on Saturday (Oct. 30) when they host Baldwin Wallace, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
