CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts — The Marietta College men's rowing team returned to the Head of the Charles Regatta after missing last year due to COVID-19. The Pioneers competed in the Collegiate 8+ and Collegiate 4+ races on Sunday (Oct. 24).
"We are making terrific progress. It's great to see the team start to see the results of their hard work," Marietta head coach
Greg Myhr said. "This regatta is only a broad measure of where we may be able to go in the spring. I'm tremendously encouraged by how the team did today."
The Navy Blue and White placed 12th out of 39 crews in the Men's Collegiate 8+ race. MIT claimed the gold with a time of 14:54.924. Drexel was second finishing in 14:57.553, followed by Marist (14:58.039), Temple (15:05.142) and Bates (15:12.441) in the top five. Marietta posted a time of 15:43.402, two seconds behind MIT's second entrant and less than one second ahead of Middlebury.
In the Men's Collegiate 4+ race, the Pioneers placed eighth out of 40 crews. Vanderbilt won the fours with a time of 16:49.708. Mercyhurst took second with a time of 16:53.320, followed by Bowdoin (17:00.979), Oklahoma City (17:04.337), UC Santa Barbara (17:07.068), Embry-Riddle (17:12.294), UC Irvine (17:13.257) and Marietta (17:16.622).
Established in 1965, the Head of the Charles is the world's largest three-day rowing event. More than 11,000 athletes from around the world compete in the regatta's various events.
The Pioneers are back on the water on Saturday (Oct. 30) when they race in the Head of the Schuykill in Philadelphia.
