MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer earned a 0-0 draw with Wilmington College on Saturday (Oct. 16) evening on Marietta Field. With the tie the Pioneers are 1-9-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and the Quakers are now 5-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in OAC play.
"As disappointing as it can feel to not get a win, we'll take the point from the draw and continued to press on. Our women played the best all-around game I've witnessed to date," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin. "We deserved to win tonight but unfortunately Wilmington's goalkeeper played lights out. We must find a way to earn results going forward."
The first half was a scoreless battle, and the teams entered the intermission deadlocked at 0-0. Marietta out shot Wilmington 5-4, and had three of the five shots on goal.
Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch),
Emmah Kronenbitter (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville), and
Madi Wagner (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) all tallied a shot on goal.
The Pioneer defense of
Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook),
Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview), Wagner, and
Lydia Vach (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) helped goalie
Drew Ultican (Baltimore, Ohio/Pickerington North) pitch a first half shutout. The Quakers had a pair of shots on goal in the half, and Ultican was up to the task on both shots.
Marietta created 15 second half shots, eight of the which were on goal. The Pioneers best opportunities to score came from Kronenbitter and
Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North). Kronenbitter and Szawranskyj each received a ball that had beaten the goalkeeper, but a Wilmington defender kept the shot out of the back of the net.
Marietta's defense only allowed three shots on goal in the second half, and Ultican made saves on all three shots. Regulation ended in a 0-0 draw and the teams would play extra time.
The first overtime period was controlled by Wilmington, they created five shots, three of which were on goal. Once again neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the game went to a second overtime.
The second overtime period saw each team create a scoring opportunity.
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) drove a shot from 25 yards out, but the Quaker goalie pushed the ball over the cross bar.
Ultican played all 110 minutes in net for the Pioneers, she faced 17 shots, nine of which were on goal, and made nine saves. This is the second shutout of the season for Marietta.
Marietta will return to action Wednesday (Oct. 20) when they travel to take on Mount Union, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
