PHILADELPHIA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's rowing team concluded the 2019 season with a pair of fifth-place showings and one second-place finish Saturday (May 11) at the 81st annual Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta.
"All of our crews raced very hard today and, through the course of the spring, showed improvement," Marietta head coach
Philip Schmehl said. "While we are not happy about today's placing, we are optimistic about what the team can do moving forward."
The 3V crew was first on the water and battled stroke for stroke with La Salle for second place in the 3V heavyweight 8+ Level 2 Final. Purdue won the race finishing six seconds ahead of Marietta and La Salle.
Marietta claimed second in a near photo finish with La Salle. The Pioneers clipped the Explorers at the finish line posting a time of 6:09.517 just ahead of La Salle's 6:09.952.
In the varsity heavyweight Level 4 Final, the Pioneers fell behind the leaders in the first 1,000 meters and could not catch up in the second half of the race. North Carolina won the race in 5:40.619. Marietta finished in 5:51.885, four seconds behind fourth-place La Salle.
Marietta's 2V crew placed fifth in the junior varsity heavyweight 8+ Level 2 Final. The top five boats all stayed within a boat length throughout the race. Bucknell won the race with a time of 5:48.206, two seconds ahead of Army (5:50.054).
Jacksonville claimed third with a time of 5:51.294, with Delaware (5:52.891) in fourth and Marietta (5:54.691) fifth. Massachusetts finished a distant sixth.
