5/10/2019 9:43:00 PM

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Marietta College men's rowing team had three crews on the water Friday (May 10) at the 81st annual Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta. Two of the Pioneers' boats advanced to Saturday's Level 2 Finals, while the varsity crew will race in the Level 4 Final.

"In a deep field, the varsity raced hard and unfortunately did not qualify for the semifinals," Marietta head coach Philip Schmehl said. "We head into the 4th level final with something to prove."

Marietta finished 21st of 28 crews in the varsity heavyweight 8+ time trial. The Pioneers posted a time of 6:06.607 missing out on the semifinals by 3.5 seconds. The Level 4 Final is set for 10 a.m. Saturday.

"The 2V started the day by qualifying for their semifinals," Schmehl said. "In their afternoon semifinal they raced with incredible passion and narrowly missed qualifying for the grand final."

The Pioneers posted a time of 6:18.330 in the junior varsity heavyweight 8+ time trial to place 13th out of 19 crews and earn a spot in the semifinals. In a tight semifinal, Drexel and Marist were the first two across the line and advanced to the Grand Final.

Delaware edged Marietta at the line to finish third with a time of 6:37.190. The Pioneers crossed in 6:38.745, ten seconds ahead of the fifth-place shell. Marietta will row in the Level 2 Final at 9 a.m. Saturday.

"The 3V also qualified for the petite final after finishing 4th in their heat," Schmehl said. "They have made incredible progress each week and are looking forward to showing more speed tomorrow."

Temple won the 3V heat with a time of 6:47.240. Delaware and Drexel claimed the final two spots in the Grand Final with the Pioneers placing fourth in the heat and advancing into the Level 2 Final. Drexel beat MC to the line by less than eight seconds. The Level 2 Final is set for 8:40 a.m. Saturday.
